The Department of Human Relations and Multicultural Education (HURL) offers B.A and B.S. Minors, with courses and programs on social justice and anti-oppression, peace, and the environment for active global citizenship and careers working for a better world. We also offer an inter-disciplinary Masters in Social Responsibility Program. The Department resides in the School of Education, whose primary mission is to prepare effective teachers for the P-12 schools. The department provides education in self-awareness and skills essential for living and working in a democratic, environmentally sustainable, and socially just society. Our students are passionate about various issues, including oppression and social justice related to race, gender, age, class, religion, disability, physical appearance, sexual orientation and nationality/culture.
+ Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses which address the intersections of social justice, peace, and environmental issues in national and global contexts, including issues of race, class, gender, age, nationality/ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religion and physical appearance.
+ Provide support and leadership for all aspects of the HURL program: teacher education, racial issues, the HURL Minor, and the Social Responsibility Master's Degree (collaborated program with Human Relations, Sociology, and Women's Studies) program by: teaching courses, disseminating program information and recruitment, program advising, providing guidance and support to students, and serving on graduate project committees.
+ Leadership and participation in departmental business addressing departmental and program enhancement, assessment, and future development within the college and university.
+ Advising and supporting students involved in departmental courses and programs and related activities/organizations.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to: 1) teach and/or perform assignment effectively; 2) conduct scholarly achievement or research; 3) continue preparation and study in discipline; 4) contribute to student growth and
development; and 5) provide service to the university and community. (IFO Article 22, Section B)

Minimum Qualifications:
+ Doctorate in field related to the responsibilities above (ABD acceptable at the time of application if Doctorate is completed by date of appointment)
+ Evidence of success in teaching and working with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds.
+ Demonstrated record of teaching excellence on social justice, anti-oppression, equity and environmental issues and actions.
+ Demonstrated knowledge of the interconnections of social justice, peace, and the environment in national and global contexts; critical media and policy analyses; structural/global/economic analyses; constructive approaches to actions (personal and collective) that address root causes of oppression, violence and environmental destruction.
+ Demonstrated experience in constructive social action for social justice,
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Candidates with terminal degree in education and background/experience in teaching social justice education.
+ Demonstrated record working with P-12 schools on equity, inclusion and social justice.
+ Demonstrated evidence of a strong record of student support and advocacy.
+ Demonstrated record of activities in program development, advising, and other activities in academia or other settings.
+ Demonstrated record of writing and scholarly activities on social justice education, equity and anti-oppression.
