Our goal is to help all Minnesota children become proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade and give them a better start to their futures. If you are passionate about education and literacy, join us and make a difference in the lives of preschool and elementary students. Become a Minnesota Reading Corps tutor and help struggling readers, age 3 to grade 3, get on track for reading at grade level. WeA?ll provide training to get you started and ongoing coaching so youA?ll be supported throughout your term of service. Travel to multiple licensed family childcare providersA? homes in St. Cloud to provide early literacy support to preschool:aged children in preparation for kindergartenConduct 90:minute Reading Corps sessions in order to provide supplemental literacy skill development for childrenProvide intentional, meaningful and fun literacy instruction to improve the early literacy skills of children ages 2 : 5. Tutors will give children the opportunity to talk, read, write and play every day using early literacy best practices.Conduct quick and easy literacy assessments and record student progress in an online data systemMeet with the literacy coach and childcare provider regularly to review student data and make decisions to better meet each studentA?s needsMaintain confidentiality of all student dataAttend required Reading Corps sponsored trainings to learn the literacy strategiesAttend monthly evening training sessions with childcare providersOrganize and attend activities such as family nights and other site:specific events Strong interest in education, specifically in helping PreK students develop their early literacy and Kindergarten:readiness skillsDedication to community service and ability to commit to full term of serviceBasic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and emailAttention to detailOrganized, responsible, flexible, motivated, and professionalAbility to accept and incorporate constructive feedback from coaches and program staffExcellent time management and decision:making skillsAbility to work with diverse personalitiesAbility to adapt to a sometimes challenging, high:pressure environmentStrong personal standards of excellence, ethics, and integrityPreferred QualificiationsExperience working with disadvantaged and marginalized populationsExperience working with homeless and highly mobile youth and children who have experienced traumaAbility to see the strengths and possibility in each childPassion for social justice and equity in educationExperience working with individuals with diverse perspectives, cultures, and backgrounds Eligibility RequirementsAbility to speak, read, and write English fluentlyAge 18 or older by the program start datePossess a high school diploma or a GED by the program start dateCitizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United StatesPlease note:Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time. Currently, AmeriCorps members are limited to four terms of service.Tutors are paid a modest living allowance every two weeks during their service term and receive an education award upon successful completion which may be used to pay qualified student loans or tuition. Tutors over age 55 may choose to gift their education award to their child or grandchild. Tutors may be eligible for health insurance, child care assistance, and student loan forbearance during their service.
